Japanese drug company Takeda Pharmaceutical has agreed to pay $2.4 billion to settle lawsuits that claim the company hid knowledge about the diabetes drug Actos‘ risk of causing bladder cancer, The New York Times reported on April 28.
The payout aims to settle thousands of bladder cancer claims filed against Takeda. Despite the settlement, however, the drug company still rejects allegations that its anti-diabetes blockbuster drug can cause bladder cancer, saying that the settlement was made to “reduce the uncertainties of complex litigation.” The company further stated that it stands firm in its belief that Actos’ benefits outweigh any of its risks.
There are currently about 9,000 bladder cancer claims pending against Takeda Pharmaceutical.
